Taped hair extensions have been around for a long time. I know because I have been doing them for a long time. Just like everything else, when something is that good, everyone wants to “play” too. The sad thing is you have to know the rules to participate and like I always say, “practice makes perfect”.

I don’t like to bash or write nasty things about other companies and their products. So I won’t but what I will do is state the facts. Taped hair extensions or “surgical tape extensions” as some may call it are so easy to do that you can almost do them at home, just like you could give yourself a mani or pedi. Except just like a mani and pedi we all know it isn’t the same and it never lasts. Quality and experience is key and my passion for hair extensions is so important to me that I decided to do some homework.

Some of you may not know that I do all types of extensions and I don’t promote just one company. I promote quality and when I like something, I like because I use it.

Dallas Wedding Hair

Its wedding season and I always get excited about it because hair is just as important as the dress. That’s where I step in and make things happen. Wedding hair is a big deal but Dallas wedding hair has to be done really BIG!

I recently did hair for a three day wedding at the Four Seasons in Los Colinas Texas. Three days and 14 hair styles later, it was the most beautiful winter wonderland wedding I was a part of. Below is a video link of the happy couple. Congratulations Julie and Aharon!

Look who was spotted at The Beauty Box Salon today in Dallas! Jason Castro from American Idol was at the salon today. We at The Beauty Box salon don’t like to give too many details but we did visit with him and Jason Castro was more than happy to say he was here and will be back. How  exciting!!!

Happy New Year | 2013

Happy New Year Everyone! I hope everyone is as excited as I am about 2013. I spent New Years Eve 2013 in San Diego with close fiends and my fiance. It was a fantastic time at the beach but now I am back in the salon and ready to “bang out” some hair. I have much in stored for 2013. Such as some trend classes and color classes for hair. I can’t wait to share with my clients all the new I will be learning. Traveling all over the US for all things beauty. Working with some celebrity hair stylist on projects and traveling just for fun.

I have a feeling this year will be about BIG hair! I love the long Farrah Fawcett look. I hope this trend comes back and stays for the year! I also predict lots of highlights and color this year.

Ever hear of locks of love? Donations can be accepted at the door but Not required. All proceeds will go to  Locks of Love, a wonderful non-profit organization that provides vacuum fitted hairpieces to children suffering from hair loss.

I recently attended a hair cutting class in Dallas for Sebastian. Joshua Michael Wagner was the instructor. After being in his class I realized I just had to pick his brain. After reading this interview you will see why.

Sonia Isaguirre: When did your interest in hair design begin?

Joshua Michael Wagner: My interest in hair design started in high school. I began cutting my friends hair on my front porch when I was 13. Self taught for a few years as a barber. I eventually picked up my barbering hours and training on my off time while I was in the navy. I never thought that this would ever be a career for me but boy was I wrong.

SI: How did you get involved with Sebastian?

JW: When I got out of the US navy, I started college and then I simultaneously began cosmetology school.After about 4 years in the industry behind the chair I decided it was time to expand my craft. That’s when hard work and a bit of good fortune landed me a chance to try out for the newly redesigned Sebastian team!

SI: What is your favorite Sebastian product and how do you suggest it’s used?

JMW: My favorite Sebastian product is trillant. It is so lightweight you can use it in anyone’s hair but it protects the hair from heat. Trilliant gives a Lil touch of volume, and the rock crystal extract in the mixture makes all hair types shine!! It can also be used on wet or dry hair.

SI: What is the one mistake you see women making with their hair and how can they fix it?

JMW: Not enough women protect their hair from heat, blow dryers and flat irons, and keeping up with your trim and shaping is so key to healthy, shiny, beautiful hair.

SI: What are some of your favorite hair trends for fall?

JMW: I am loving the use of warm gold’s, and shuttle hints of red in all my fall color mixtures. Even adding them toy chocolate browns to give a hint of warmth through the next few months.

SI: If you could give every woman an invaluable piece of hair advice, what would it be?

JMW: Deep condition your hair when the seasons change. Temperature fluctuation pulls all of the moisture out of your hair and cause dry frizzy splint ends. I don’t care if you have fine hair. Use a lightweight deep conditioner like drench or penetrate to bring the life back to your hair.

SI: What is the most enjoyable part of your job?

JMW: The most enjoyable part of my job is meeting amazing people all over the world! I love people, I love creating a specific look for a person that when the leave my chair they feel like a rockstarr!

SI: I recently attended your class in Dallas Texas. Where is your next class and do you love traveling?

JMW: I am currently answering these questions at a hotel in Houston. Then next week Baltimore. Then I am taking a week off to do some volunteer work in Nicaragua, building water supply and housing for one of the communities there. I love to travel! It’s the biggest part of my life right now!

I recently went to Richard Kavanagh’s class while he was in Dallas. I have seen his work before at New York Fashion week and on the runway and in magazines. He is known to be a great celebrity stylist and after attending his class, I can see why. His class was brilliant and his fellow friend Charlie Price was an amazing co-host. Its not easy entertaining hairdressers on a Sunday early in the morning before labor day but they pulled it off.

Richard Kavanagh’s insight made me smile and his accent defiantly helped while teaching the class. He did make a few jokes about not understanding him but trust me he also spoke with his hands and I could see everyone understood exactly what he was saying. It’s refreshing to have a class on things one doesn’t’t already know. I haven’t felt inspired in a long time to try something new until Richard’s class. He taught the class not to be afraid to try new things and to create with everything around you. I was blown away by his braiding techniques and his “flower updo”. I’m glad I went and sipping on mimosa’s was a bonus!

I immediately spoke to him after the “show”/class and was blown away on how professional and nice he was. I can’t even imagine trying to teach hairdressers something and getting us to understand it.

Charlie Price, a man with vision, introduced Richard Kavanagh and did such a great job. I can’t wait to attend his next class! I saw something on Richards Facebook that made me smile..he mentioned he loved Dallas..Well Richard, Dallas loves you. Thank you for an amazing start of a new hair adventure for me.

Beating the heat this summer isn’t easy and if I could I would tell you all to stay inside but lets face it. We all want to be in the pool sipping on something cold.

Here are a few tips when battling the heat this summer. Remember I am keeping in mind that we all want the same thing, to have healthy shiny hair. Here are my 5 tips for summer 2012.

1. Sock Bun

Oh, the ever fabulous sock bun! It is perfect for any time of the year, but especially during the summer since it can keep your hair on top of your head and off the back of your neck! Its simple, you can use a sock with the toe cut off, or if you’re feeling fancy you can purchase a mesh hair donut to roll your hair around…there are even different size options so you can create the perfect size bun.

2. Humidity Resistant Products are Your friend

I can not live without my Moroccan oil and whipped mouse during the summer time. I use it on all my clients and on myself. Its perfect to keep humidity out so your hair doesn’t stand up or look frizzy.

3.  Keep It Light With The Moisture

Because the summer months pack the humidity on heavily, you have to take the moisture in the air into consideration with your summer hair products. If you use conditioner, make sure to put it on lightly so it wont weigh your hair down later on.

Personally, I apply conditioner to the ends of my hair only in the summer months: it helps keep my hair smooth, but doesn’t make my hair sit flat on my head. Any other time I apply mid-shaft of the hair down.

4. Hairspray Can Be Your Friend

Sometimes the best way to keep your style intact during the summer months is to give it some holding power. Hairspray is essential in my beauty routine for this reason: without it, my hair tends to curl in on one side and out on the other – no joke! Beware a little goes a long way.

5. Try Some New Styles Out

There have been SO many amazing hair tutorials making their rounds on the Internet lately. Try a few of them out! If you need some inspiration you tube and The Beauty Box Website can you give you step by step ways to do some of the trendy styles today. Such as the fish tail braid and sporty updos.

I wanted a different look so I decided to go blonde. It was a gradual situation and fun to do. Brandon my friend and fellow stylist did my hair and did such a great job. I had not been blonde in a long time, in fact I have never been blonde. Always a few highlights here and there but never all the way blonde. Brandon also braided my hair in this really cool braid. I didn’t think his big man hands could do such pretty work but he did.

Blonde for me lasted for a few months and I went back to my dark locks recently. Blondes do have more fun but as a brunette I was already having fun and couldn’t handle the fun over load

If your thinking about going blonde I suggest to gradually do it the way I did. Its a great way to change your look. Who knows maybe you can handle the “fun” better than I could.

I recently went to Cancun Mexico for Cinco De Mayo 2012 and the water was beautiful!! The weather was really nice and the people fantastic. We stayed at Live Aqua, i highly recommend it to couples (its adults only).

We visited Tulum and it was beautiful. One thing that caught my eye were these two women in their thong bikinis. At first I was like “oh no they didn’t”! They literally arrived with friends and stripped running towards the water. These European ladies didn’t care who was watching and loved just being there. Laughing and the self confidence was impressive. I think several women lack confidence, another reason I love my job is because hair extensions or just a new hair color helps with that.

The day we went on our tour to Tulum it was hot, so I sported my fish tail braid. It was fun and it kept my hair off my neck so the breeze could brush by me. Another high recommendation is braiding your hair this summer. Its fun and sexy and really easy to do.

Over the years I have learned that hair extensions aren’t for everyone but it really does help with confidence, volume and length of your hair. Here are some before and afters of my client that was wanting length that looked real and beautiful.

We did several phases in our shoot. We started with first date hair and then went on to engagement hair and last but not least wedding hair. The beauty box salon wanted something classy but not classic. A mix of curls, a braid and tall hair something that not an ordinary bride would wear. A very editorial, runway look.

Brad, Rosa, Brandon and myself worked hard to get those messy curls to stand up. The braid was easy and the teasing was fun. Brad is amazing at teasing..just ask anyone.

Our photographer Jessica Grammon had the perfect eye and didn’t mind our input, even when we had too much “input”. She understood our artistic eye and knew exactly what we wanted. The dress was from Rosa Clara and I would recommend them to anyone. The styles they have would suit anyone because they have so many beautiful dresses. They are located in Dallas and the ladies are lovely to talk to, very helpful.

This wedding look we created is very bride of Frankenstein looking. Zombie, vampire is very in and as a hairstylist I’m glad we stepped out of “the box” and into the tree house to create what others are afraid to. I think that sums it up, we are a salon full of creative souls that know what classy is but when you ask for more like our Chris Box did, we will do exactly that.

Braids in Dallas is whats hot this year but for many reasons. Its hot sticky and on some days windy outside. So its much easier to braid your mane than to fluff it wih bouncy curls.

Plus there are so many braids out there that are sexy and easy to do. Braids are great for the patio and on rainy days. Even on nice days and you just don’t want to mess with your hair.

A little dry shampoo like Kenra Platinum through the top and a braid at the end and BAM!

Perfect do for any day. To make it even easier most salons like The Beauty Box Salon offer the braid as a style.

Hair extensions have always been a passion of mine for several years now. I was first introduced to tape hair extensions when I had tried to go lighter with my hair color and it “fried” off my ends. I was mortified and didn’t want to be seen in public. That is until I met taped hair extensions.

I love all things beauty but easilengths by easihair takes first place. Its 100% human hair and it feels like silk. I am jealous of the way it feels up against my own hair and when styling, it holds a better curl than my own.

Being in the beauty biz (Dallas Hair Dresser) it’s important to use quality products and when you find that right one, it’s hard to use anything else. Lets be honest, there’s allot of crap out there! Easilengths hair extensions truly are life changing and will give you georgeous hair. I would compare it to ones perfect soul mate. When found it’s hard to separate two things that feel so right.

I personally wouldn’t recommend anything I don’t believe in and my clients sit satisfied in my chair. In fact clients won’t go a day without it.

It always starts with a consultation and then goes from there. I have been using easilegths for a long time on myself and on my clients and nothing compares.

One of my favorite trends right now is the headscarf. Wearing scarves allow people who want to show off a bold appearance and help them transform the everyday look. It can be worn several ways that can make a persons appearance casual or elegant.

Headscarves were a regular thing in the 1950s. Its 2012 now and I am excited scarves are making their way back, Many designers have come up with a scarf in their line and I predict we will see scarves on the regular of Fashion runways. 

This is really interesting for people who have not tried vintage styles.Today, scarves cover most to the head but with your own little twist it can look contemporary and stylish. The colors used for todays scarf is very modern and bright and therefore you can use it with different types of clothes you wear every day.

Most of the cloth for headscarves are made of, silk, wool, chiffon, satin, cotton, polyester and some of cashmere. Most scarves can be used in all weather and can be used to protect the head, face and neck from the hot summer sun and winter cold.

I was in Vegas last week and sported the scarf at least twice. It was really windy and perfect for the patio and poolside. My hair didn’t blow around and stayed in place. 

I recommend choosing a scarf based on what works for you and what type of look you are going for. Have fun with it and don’t be shy.

I had the most amazing opportunity to work with my very talented team at The Beauty Box Salon last weekend. Our hair model was stunning in everything she wore and our beauty photographer had the perfect eye for what we were looking for.

I have always been proud to be part of The Beauty Box Team but after working with them during this shoot I realized how professional and crazy talented my team is.From gathering everything one needs to have a successful shoot, such as wardrobe, hairstyles, make up ideas etc.

It was the perfect recipe and then when we added a very flexible model and an experienced photographer to the mix it was, well must I say it, “Damn perfect”.

I have done several photo shoots in the past and none that ran as smooth as what we had last weekend.  I took a few shots off my iPhone just for fun and to show clients.

It was a long day but at the end of the day I didn’t feel drained or tired, just pleased. Being behind the chair makes me happy. Transforming women on a daily basis makes me content but working with a great team on photo shoots gives me an artistic accomplishment, such as painting. I look forward to our next shoot.
