Interview

Sonia Isaguirre

(Interview with Jennifer Pompa from Dallas La Mode Magazine)

I met Sonia at a local Eatery La Duni (a latin grill and bakery) in the Highland Park Village Shopping Center. A short walking distance from our salon and delicious as well.

Sonia has been a behind the scenes presence in the world of hair for years and years and has ventured out to serve the public, and we couldn’t be more excited she decided to do so!  She was part of the invention of a line of extensions that took off around the world and has also worked with a major player in the world of hair, based locally:  extensions.com and wigs.com

On this June day its so hot outside “you could fry an egg”, so it seems only natural that we should have a mojito to cool down a bit. Our only stipulation: no sugar, substitute splenda. A girl has to watch her figure, after all it is bikini season in Texas.

Sonia showed up dressed super classy, yet fun and feminine. She has long brown hair with natural loose beachy waves.  As I was envying her legs that went on for days, she sat down to give my interview while the latin music played softly in the background: We both ordered a light salad and I settled in with my notes.

Sonia has a voice that could soothe even the most rigid of souls, and I felt myself relax as her charm and personality took over.

Jenn: Its so nice to be here with you today to chat hair and get to know you.

Sonia: Its good to be here!

Jenn: So Sonia, What do you feel makes you unique as a stylist?

Sonia: (Deep in thought she seems to struggle finding only one thing that makes her unique) Well I’ve been doing extensions for over 8 years and I kinda helped re-invent some things.  I guess just being creative in my own way, finding my own unique style. I love trying new things, not doing the generic hairstyle everyday, I like trying other things too. So I guess it’s studying up, doing my homework and then trying it out and putting my own spin on it.

Jenn: What’s your favorite service to provide?

Sonia: Lets see….I love doing extensions, everything about them, from applying them to styling them out. I think they help women feel sexy and more beautiful,  and I like that they do that!( She flips her own long hair from one shoulder to the next and gives a shy smile)  Yeah it has to be Hair Extensions for sure!

Jenn: So, are hair extensions your most requested hair style or service?

Sonia: Well I think specifically where I’m at, meaning the Beauty Box Salon which is known for extensions, it absolutely speaks to that clientele. Its a service that a huge portion of my clientele wants and enjoys….And its really all kinds of hair extensions from Easilengths, to Klix, Strand by Strand, its a big assortment of types.

Jenn: Ok Sonia, In your opinion what famous person right now has the worst hair and who has the best hair?

Sonia: The worst hair has to be Rihanna, am I saying that right? ( I nod yes) Yeah, that would have to be the worst. I know most of the time she’s wearing wigs and things like that. There’s so many good hairpieces and wigs out there but I think she just goes to the costume shop and picks something out and says “ok that’s it” without even trying it out. I just can’t believe her stylist lets her get away with it, its awful.

For the best, I would have to say….And I know this is really cliché but:The Kardashian girls. They really wear their hair pieces and extensions well. Most people don’t even know they are wearing extensions and bang pieces, all these extra little additions, they’re wearing them and they rock it out!

Jenn: So, What is your favorite part of being in the beauty industry?

Sonia: (Without a moments hesitation) Making women feel good about themselves. Helping them with their beauty routine. Showing them different ways to feel sexy and beautiful, even though most are already sexy and beautiful! Showing them different hair techniques whether it’s round brushing their hair, or adding curls, things like that.

Jenn: What do you like to do when you aren’t at the salon?

Sonia: Well, I also am an artist on the side. I like to paint. I enjoy drawing with my kids, playing with my dog, things like that. I also love the outdoors, I love the water. I especially love the water right now since it’s so hot outside!

Jenn: Where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?

Sonia: Most definitely traveling. All over the US, I’d even like to take it across the pond and do some fun things with hair over there. I’ve had several opportunities in the past to travel, but I think in the next 5 years I’ll definitely be taking them. So just traveling and meeting new people, making the world more beautiful all the way around.

Jenn: Any other info you would like readers to know:

Sonia: Info…on myself? Or on what?

Jenn: Yeah, do you have any other personal things to throw in or any kind of beauty tips and tricks….anything at all.

Sonia: I think my biggest beauty tip would have to be: If someone says “wow, those are really great hair extensions” then they’re really not, cause no one should really notice that your wearing hair extensions or a hair piece. They should be saying, “wow you have really great hair” or “ I’m jealous”. And I take that back in part, unless your going from like a short bob to hair down to your back, then if someone notices your great hair extensions then that’s good! But that would have to be my biggest beauty tip.

Jenn: Well it was lovely talking to you today and thanks for our interview

Sonia: AAAh, thank you. It was good talking to you too Jennifer Pompa!
